Biography

Established in Paris since 1992 after growing up on Réunion Island, Olivier Ker Ourio has become one of the foremost chromatic jazz harmonica players on the international scene. Recognised as a worthy heir to Toots Thielemans, he is at once a highly sought‑after soloist, a refined composer, and an inspired bandleader. His music is expressive and warm, prioritising emotion and speaking straight to the heart, carried by an instantly recognisable sound, exceptionally fluid phrasing, and a mastery of tone that brings his playing close to the human voice.

Over the course of fourteen albums under his own name, Ker Ourio has built a singular, poetic universe, nourished by lyrical melodies, inventive harmonies, and often unexpected rhythmic structures. His compositions outline a world where melodic depth, an inner sense of song, and formal rigour converge into a true “breath of the soul”, consistently praised by critics. His new album “Life As It Is” (scheduled for release on 27 March 2026) features him alongside Mathis Cordier (guitars), Benoît Sourisse (organ), André Charlier (drums), and guest artist Andy Narell (steel drums), further extending a remarkably coherent discographic trajectory.

The greatest artists have taken note: Alexandre Desplat, Jean‑Claude Petit, Vladimir Cosma, Francis Lai, Michel Legrand, Didier Lockwood, Philippe Catherine, Martial Solal, Paolo Fresu, Stefano di Battista, Jean‑Jacques Milteau, Laurent Voulzy, and Danyel Waro have all called on him, both in the studio and on stage. This impressive list of collaborations firmly places Olivier Ker Ourio at the heart of the jazz landscape and beyond, at the crossroads of film music, European jazz, Creole aesthetics, and world music. The press describes him as “a fine musician everyone is vying for”, a “master of voluptuous trajectories”, and “a reference of French jazz, as Milteau is for the blues”, underlining the extraordinary suppleness of his sound and that extra touch of charm which situates his playing in the lineage of the great lyrical wind soloists.

First and foremost a live performer, Olivier Ker Ourio has toured extensively around the world: France and Europe (Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Turkey, the Balkans, Ukraine, Russia), Africa (Algeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana), the Middle East (Bahrain), the Americas (United States, Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico), and many island territories (Réunion, Mauritius, Guadeloupe, Madagascar, Mayotte, Corsica). Everywhere he goes, he brings this singular vocal‑like sound on the harmonica to the stage: an art of breath that turns each concert into a sensitive, elegant, and profoundly musical experience. For any programmer, inviting Olivier Ker Ourio means welcoming to the stage one of the most subtle and moving voices in today’s jazz.
