Born in 1983 in Saint-Denis, Réunion, into a family of musicians,
Christophe Zoogonès is a jazz flautist and EWI player whose distinctive playing is deeply rooted in the gospel of his childhood and in Réunionese maloya. After classical and then jazz studies at the Conservatoire de La Réunion, he moved to Paris to continue his training at CIM and then at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Paris, where he refined a style at the crossroads of jazz, soul, and world music. A sought-after composer and arranger, he notably wrote several tracks for the Caribbean pop album «
Limyé mwen » by singer
Gaby Diop, alongside musicians such as
Thomas Bellon,
Gregory Privat or
Maher Beauroy. As a bandleader, his first album «
Kind of Zoo » (2015) asserted an organic fusion of maloya and jazz-rock, while «
Zoology » delves deeper into a bold jazz-fusion, driven by a quartet of flute, piano, bass, and drums which includes, among others,
Jerry Leonide,
Hadrien Feraud and
Yoann Schmidt.
Christophe Zoogonès has now emerged as one of the most distinctive and acclaimed jazz flautists of his generation, far beyond the Réunionese scene alone. Through his precise articulation, sense of phrasing, and command of both acoustic and amplified registers (flute, EWI), he develops a language that places him in the lineage of the great stylists of the instrument, while asserting an immediately recognizable musical identity. His ability to combine virtuosity, lyricism, and groove—whether in quartet, large ensemble, or in collaboration with international musicians such as
Meddy Gerville,
Olivier Ker Ourio,
Thierry Fanfant,
Michel Alibo, has made him a rising reference among jazz flautists in Europe, regularly praised by his peers as well as by the most demanding programmers.
On stage, Christophe Zoogonès cultivates a powerful, airy sound, fed by generous improvisations and a strong sense of interaction with his fellow musicians. He has also been invited to join Thierry Maillard's big band alongside leading soloists on the European scene, including Stéphane Guillaume, Stéphane Chausse, Claude Égéa, Médéric Collignon, Didier Havet, among others. Balancing his work as a performer, his projects as a bandleader, and his commitment to teaching as a jazz educator, he stands out as one of the defining voices of contemporary Réunionese jazz, fully embracing his mixed heritage and his « créolité. »
