ORCHESTRAL STORYTELLING JAZZ

Reis Demuth Wiltgen

Orchestral contemporary jazz where trio intimacy unfolds into cinematic scale.

Reis Demuth Wiltgen is one of the defining contemporary jazz trios to emerge from Luxembourg. Formed in 1998 by pianist Michel Reis, bassist Marc Demuth and drummer Paul Wiltgen, the group has developed a rare collective identity over more than two decades: a language built on lyrical writing, rhythmic precision, deep listening and an instinctive sense of form. Their music does not treat the piano trio as a fixed format, but as a space of constant movement — intimate when needed, open-ended when the moment demands it, and always driven by the shared imagination of three equal voices. With Freedom Trail, released by CAM Jazz in June 2026, the trio expands this identity to symphonic scale. The project revisits and reimagines its own repertoire alongside the Luxembourg Philharmonic, conducted by seven-time Grammy Award winner Vince Mendoza, with tenor saxophonist Joshua Redman featured on three tracks. Rather than adding orchestral colour as an ornament, the arrangements extend the narrative power already present in the trio’s compositions: piano lines gain new horizons, bass and drums become the engine of broader landscapes, and the orchestra opens a powerful dialogue between jazz improvisation and cinematic orchestral writing.

The recording grew out of a landmark performance at the Philharmonie Luxembourg, where the trio’s music was first presented in orchestral form. After several postponements, the project was recorded in July 2022 and has now become the trio’s fifth album. The eight-track programme includes compositions by all three members: most are written by Michel Reis, with Viral and Home Is Nearby by Paul Wiltgen, and Dante by Marc Demuth. Vince Mendoza arranged four pieces, while Michel Reis arranged the remaining four, making the album a genuine artistic exchange rather than a simple orchestral.

Joshua Redman’s presence is rooted in a long artistic relationship with the trio. After first encountering their music in France in 2014, he performed several of their compositions with his own groups and later joined them on stage, including for a European tour in 2018. On Freedom Trail, his tenor saxophone brings an additional lyrical and improvisational dimension to the title track, Cross Country and Catherine’s Song.

Reis Demuth Wiltgen is available as a trio and also as a quartet project.
Line-up can be adapted to the artistic direction, venue capacity and event format.

PRESS

The Reis Demuth Wiltgen Trio are a great piano, bass and drums trio from Luxembourg. They have a real identity and a real connection. And even more so with their compositions. They have this way of being sophisticated, from a technical standpoint, and also really melodic. I kind of fell in love with their song-writing.
JOSHUA REDMAN

A new original touch in the world of piano, double bass and drums trios. Between magnificent romantic compositions and New York groove.
