Island Glow Jazz Journeys

Olivier Ker Ourio

Sunlit harmonic jazz where Creole roots, Caribbean pulse and Brazilian warmth meet.

Olivier Ker Ourio is one of the most distinctive voices of the chromatic harmonica in contemporary jazz. A composer, bandleader and sought-after soloist, he has developed a personal language in which virtuosity is never an end in itself: each phrase is shaped by melody, touch, silence and a deep sense of narrative. Raised in Réunion Island and based in Paris for many years, he carries both worlds within his music — the openness of the Indian Ocean and the restless curiosity of the jazz scene.

With Life As It Is, released in March 2026 on Continuo Jazz, Olivier Ker Ourio presents a new quartet project that brings together his lyrical harmonica playing with the expressive guitar of Mathis Cordier, the rich Hammond organ textures of Benoît Sourisse and the subtle, dynamic drumming of André Charlier. The album also features the unmistakable steel pan of Andy Narell on two tracks, adding another luminous voice to its sonic landscape.

Rather than illustrating a fixed idea of “island jazz,” Life As It Is lets influences circulate naturally. Brazilian colour, Caribbean motion, Creole memory and contemporary jazz writing coexist in a music that remains fluid, melodic and deeply inhabited. The compositions carry the warmth of open horizons while allowing room for delicacy, improvisation and collective listening. The harmonica moves through this setting with unusual freedom: at times intimate and vocal, at times playful, at times expansive, always at the service of the song.

The project takes its name from a simple but essential principle: life does not need to be polished to be meaningful. Life As It Is embraces contrast — movement and stillness, brightness and introspection, familiar roots and new encounters. It is music made for attentive listening, but equally for the immediacy of the stage: generous, alive and open to the moment.

On stage, the quartet turns this repertoire into a living conversation. The interplay between harmonica, guitar, organ and drums creates a warm, organic sound, with every musician given space to shape the journey. This is not a demonstration of style, but a shared musical landscape: elegant, rhythmic and full of air.

With Life As It Is, Olivier Ker Ourio confirms his singular place in jazz: an artist who expands the expressive possibilities of the harmonica while keeping the human core of the music unmistakably close. The album received a CHOC Jazz Magazine distinction in April 2026.

Olivier Ker Ourio is available as a quartet project.
