Biography
Davy Sicard is one of the leading voices of contemporary maloya and a key figure of Réunionese world music. Born in 1973 to Malagasy and Indian parents, he grew up between the Paris suburbs and Réunion Island, and very early on forged a deeply hybrid musical identity. A multi‑instrumentalist, songwriter, composer, and performer, he has shaped what he calls “maloya kabosé”: a maloya open to sounds from around the world, infused with the colours of blues, reggae, rock, and African and Malagasy music.
Revealed in the 1990s with the a cappella quartet College Brothers, he came to prominence opening for major artists such as Dee Dee Bridgewater, Manu Dibango, James Brown, and Cesaria Evora, and won the RFI Média Adami Award, which took him on an international tour. He then continued the adventure with System Sy’, a soul‑funk band that won the Tremplin de Saint‑Gilles competition, before embarking on a solo career in the early 2000s.
Since his first album Ker Volkan (2003), followed by Ker Maron (2006), Kabar (2008), Mon Péï (2011), Mon Zanfan (2015), Bal Kabar (2020) and the recent Kafé Griyé, Davy Sicard has constantly reinvented his musical language while preserving an immediately recognisable signature. His albums, praised for the power of their lyrics and the subtlety of their arrangements, weave together a quest for identity, a strong Creole commitment, and a universal openness. On stage, his charisma, deeply inhabited presence, and powerful voice make him a true cultural bridge, able to connect Réunionese roots with traditions from around the globe, from India to various African musics.
A flagship artist of the Réunionese scene and a regular guest on major stages and festivals, Davy Sicard is today one of the most distinctive and inspiring standard‑bearers of maloya and world music. His music, both intimate and unifying, offers a profound journey into the heart of an island, a memory, and a shared humanity in motion.
