In line with the previous opus, which set out to explore for the first time the possibilities of a “séga nouvo”, this seventh release dives into the very roots of séga péi: earthy, sultry, and elegant, like a good cup of long‑roasted kafé griyé, in the purest Creole tradition. Yet Davy does not abandon the maloya infused with modern accents that made his name. By reconnecting with the deeply African origins of séga, “Kafé Griyé” brings back ternary grooves, forgotten aromas, and a hint of revolt, all carried by the rouler drum, at times joyful, at times melancholic.

An activist at heart, Davy Sicard set out to rekindle the common roots of these two musical lineages through the ambition of a séga that is both innovative and authentic: as light as a caress, as powerful as a kiss. Kafé griyé, the voluptuous taste of tradition.

Here, love is explored in all its forms, from passionate declarations (“Kafé griyé”, “Na riyink aou”, “Fiy maler”, “Tanto”) to forbidden romances (“Aswar pou nou briyé”). The artist also flirts with social themes close to his heart, through several songs that speak more broadly of love for others, for oneself, and for life (“Lot laba”, “Kapitenn”, “Mi ve pa oubliyé…”).

Musically, “Kafé Griyé” leaves on the palate a flavour that is both sweet and spicy, like a forbidden fruit or a lost paradise, with an aesthetic that embraces elegance and sensuality. The Réunionese singer and musician once again confirms his taste for sublimated heritage, offering his audience a “séga nouvo” as rich as the volcanic soil from which coffee springs, as smooth as the scent of its beans, lovingly ripened under the Réunion sun.

“Kafé Griyé” is an invitation to savour an original Creoleness in pure, unbridled pleasure.
