Nirina Rakotomavo

Paris Reunion

Born into a large family of musicians on Réunion Island, Nirina Rakotomavo was immersed in music, especially jazz, from a very young age. She began classical piano at age 7 and continued her studies at the regional conservatory. A singer-songwriter, composer, and arranger, the pianist has developed her own unique sound and musical language. She then moved to Paris to further her knowledge of jazz and contemporary music. Passionate about composition, she founded the Selkies project in 2014, a project where she showcases her arranging talents and with which she has performed at major festivals, such as Jazz à Vienne. She won the SACEM prize at the Crest Jazz Vocal competition (2017) as well as the Cosmo Jazz Festival competition (2018) organized by André Manoukian. In 2023, she joined the “Génération Spedidam” program and recorded her new album. Paris Réunion (2025), which highlights her "love story between Paris where I live and Réunion, the source, where I was born.".

It is a musical autobiography, recorded at QUAISON Studios, in which she shares her new compositions tinted with jazz, maloya, and song.

She is accompanied by Elie Martin-Charrière on drums, Mathias Di Giusto on guitar, Elvin Bironien on bass and Margaux Chicoisne on backing vocals.

PRESS

«This project is an enticing work in progress built around Creole songs grounded in quintessential Réunion rhythms such as sega—derived from a localised, African‑infused version of the European quadrille—and maloya, which draws among other things on West African incantatory music and carries shades of Indian traditions brought by Malabar communities in the nineteenth century. Pieces like “Sentier Malizé,” “Karrousel,” and “Kiléilé” gently draw the listener into a world of softness and charm, where the music is exquisite and the solos deeply inspired. It is a body of work full of promise, led by an artist whose universe one is eager to explore further.»
