Biography
El Comité is a true all-star band of the Cuban diaspora, considered one of the most impressive ensembles in the world in the field of Latin jazz and contemporary Afro-Cuban music. Since its creation in 2017, the group has distinguished itself with modern composition, astounding collective virtuosity, and an irresistible sense of groove, capable of igniting both major festival stages and the most demanding clubs. Led by musicians who each have a firmly established international career, El Comité presents itself as a sonic laboratory where Cuban heritage, contemporary jazz, funk, Afrobeat, and improvisation at the highest level converge.
At the heart of the group, each musician is a leading figure of their generation and contributes to making El Comité an exceptional ensemble. Saxophonist Irving Acao, often described as a "Cuban Coltrane," was discovered by Chucho Valdés, with whom he toured in Irakere and Jazz en Clave, and has collaborated with artists such as Ibrahim Maalouf, Chucho Valdés, Roy Hargrove, Michel Camilo, Danilo Pérez, McCoy Tyner, David Murray, Mike Stern, Jimmy Cliff, Nicolas Folmer, and Andy Narell. Trumpeter Carlos Sarduy has shared the stage and the studio with Chucho Valdés, Los Van Van, Esperanza Spalding, Buika, Richard Bona, Ojos de Brujo, and many others, embodying a generation of Cuban soloists comfortable in all configurations, from the purest Latin jazz to the most daring fusions. Pianist and keyboardist Rolando Luna, winner of the Montreux solo piano competition, brings a harmonic palette and a sense of lyricism that anchors the group in the great tradition of contemporary Cuban pianists.
To deliver this fiery front line, El Comité relies on an absolutely formidable rhythm section, tailor-made for the biggest stages. On double bass and bass guitar, Gaston Joya is a pillar of groove and musicality, capable of instantly shifting from the deepest support to soaring melodic lines. On drums, Rodney Barreto propels the group with a power and finesse that make him one of the most sought-after drummers on the current Cuban scene, while Yaroldy Abreu Robles, a master of percussion, enriches each piece with a tapestry of timbres and polyrhythms of rare richness. Together, they form a rhythm section of such precision and intensity that it leaves a lasting impression on every audience.
This alchemy is fully revealed on stage, where El Comité is unanimously praised for the scale of its show. The group has ignited top-tier venues such as the NN North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, the Théâtre Antique de Jazz à Vienne, Jazz à Juan, as well as numerous festivals and venues in Europe and beyond, confirming its ability to engage with the highest international standards. El Comité's concerts are described as veritable storms of groove: a torrent of inspired solos, bursts of energy, and interplay between brass, piano, and percussion, all underpinned by a precise and contemporary sound. Each performance becomes a joyful and collective celebration where the most demanding musical standards are combined with total stage presence, offering programmers a lineup capable of leaving a lasting impression on a festival and setting a new standard for live Latin jazz and Afro-jazz.
Biography
El Comité is a true “all‑star band” of the Cuban diaspora and is regarded as one of the most impressive ensembles in the world in the field of Latin jazz and contemporary Afro‑Cuban music. Since its creation in 2017, the band has stood out for its modern writing, stunning collective virtuosity, and irresistible sense of groove, capable of igniting both major festival stages and the most demanding clubs. Led by musicians whose international careers are already firmly established, El Comité operates as a sonic laboratory where Cuban heritage, contemporary jazz, funk, afro‑beat, and top‑level improvisation converge.
At the heart of the group, each musician is a leading figure of his generation and contributes to makingEl Comité an exceptional ensemble.
