Biography

Felipe Cabrera is a Cuban double bassist and composer, and a major figure on the Afro‑Cuban jazz scene based in Paris, whose international career has taken him to the world’s leading stages alongside emblematic figures of jazz and Latin music.

Born in Havana in 1961, he first trained as a bassoonist within the Cuban classical school and joined the National Symphony Orchestra before turning, as a self‑taught musician, to the double bass, jazz, and the many musical traditions of his island. In 1984, he joined Gonzalo Rubalcaba's project and spent nearly fifteen years as the pianist’s double bassist, recording eight albums including Rapsodia and Antiguo, both nominated for Grammy Awards, and touring jazz festivals and clubs worldwide.

As a key instrumentalist on the Afro‑Cuban scene, Felipe Cabrera has shared the stage with legends such as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, George Benson, Omara Portuondo, Chris Potter, Chico Freeman, as well as many leading artists from the Cuban and international scenes. He has also performed with Harold López‑Nussa, Roberto Fonseca, Julien Lourau, Mamani Keïta, Mayra Andrade, Africando, Yuri Buenaventura, and in projects with Gnawa musicians, illustrating the truly cross‑disciplinary and global dimension of his career.

As a bandeader, he has released several critically acclaimed albums, including Made in Animas (awarded “Best Latin Jazz Album”), Night Poems – eleven pieces for double bass and piano with Brazilian pianist Leonardo Montana – followed by Asi de Simple and Medusa, a trio project with Leonardo Montana and drummer Lukmil Perez. Composed between Paris and Havana, these projects assert a personal writing style at the crossroads of contemporary jazz, Afro‑Cuban rhythms, and a deep melodic sensitivity, which Felipe Cabrera brings to life from duo to quintet on stages and festivals around the globe.
