Biography
Over the years, Meddy has surrounded himself with internationally renowned musicians who have helped to assert the global dimension of his project: Michel Alibo (Sixun), Dominique Di Piazza (John McLaughlin Trio), percussion legend Giovanni Hidalgo, Cuban drummer Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez, and bassist Matthew Garrison (Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny). He also collaborates with the Paris Jazz Big Band led by Nicolas Folmer and Pierre Bertrand, confirming his place among the most inventive creators on the French‑speaking jazz scene.
A performer as much as a studio artist, Meddy Gerville has played across Europe, the United States, Africa, and the Indian Ocean, bringing “maloya jazz” to numerous international stages and festivals. His albums – from “Jazz’Oya” and “Jazz Amwin” to “Mon Maloya” – explore a style of writing that is both demanding and accessible, where pianistic virtuosity serves melody, dance, and a deep connection to Réunionese culture. Between tradition and modernity, Meddy Gerville now stands as one of the leading ambassadors of Réunionese music on the international jazz scene.
