VOLCANIC CREOLE JAZZ FUSION

Christophe Zoogonès

A volcanic pulse of Réunion into radiant, groove-driven jazz fusion.

Born in Saint-Denis, Réunion, in 1983 into a family of musicians, Christophe Zoogonès has built a singular voice at the crossroads of jazz, Creole rhythm and improvisation. A jazz flautist, composer and EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument) player, he carries the pulse of his island into a sound world shaped by gospel and maloya, jazz-rock, soul, Caribbean swing, funk and world music.

Music entered early. Raised with gospel singing and maloya, Réunion’s emblematic music of Creole identity, Zoogonès first trained in classical music at the Conservatory of Réunion before committing to jazz. In 2004 he moved to Paris to study at the CIM, then joined the Paris Conservatory in 2009. He earned its Jazz Prize in 2010 and completed the French State Diploma for jazz teaching at CEFEDEM Île-de-France in 2012. His individuality was already apparent in 2007, when he drew attention at the inaugural Couleur Jazz flute competition in Meaux.

His artistic language is grounded in fusion, but never confined by it. For Zoogonès, the flute is not an ornamental voice: it is agile, melodic, percussive and capable of carrying lyricism and propulsion. EWI expands that palette further, opening an electric, textural dimension. His debut album, Kind of Zoo (2015), made this direction clear, bringing maloya into contact with jazz-rock, soul-inflected harmony, Caribbean motion and funk-driven grooves. Recorded in Réunion, the project set an energetic course where Indian Ocean rhythms and jazz harmony meet naturally. In 2016, he was named Best World/Jazz Artist by Les Voix de l’Océan Indien.

Five years later, Zoology sharpened the focus. Written for flute/EWI, piano, electric bass and drums, the album moves beyond the more overt colours of maloya into bold, technically demanding jazz fusion that remains open, playful and physical. Zoogonès’ aerial lines meet the harmonic richness of pianist Jerry Léonide and the powerful drive of bassist Hadrien Feraud and drummer Yoann Schmidt. The result is a band sound: focused yet volatile, sophisticated yet danceable, and built around generous space for collective improvisation. Across the record, Réunion rhythms, swing, gospel, cinematic movement and blues colour are folded into compositions with narrative and momentum.

Alongside his own work, Zoogonès has developed as a collaborator, composer-arranger and sideman. He contributed to Gaby Diop’s Caribbean pop project Limyé mwen, recording with musicians including Thomas Bellon of Kassav’, Grégory Privat and Maher Beauroy. His collaborations also include Meddy Gerville, Thierry Fanfant, Michel Alibo, Anthony Jambon, Ouriel Ellert, Yoann Kempst, Jeff Ludovicus and Guillaume Ramaye. He has performed within Thierry Maillard’s Big Band, sharing large-ensemble contexts with leading French jazz musicians.

On stage, Christophe Zoogonès offers more than a meeting of influences. He creates a living, volcanic conversation: music with the precision of jazz, the bodily pull of groove, and the emotional openness of gospel and island song. His work is rooted in Réunion, yet resolutely outward-looking—an invitation to listen, move and enter a sound world where virtuosity always serves collective energy.
