Luminous Island Jazz Fusion
Nirina Rakotomavo
Island-rooted jazz-pop where piano, Creole memory and Parisian pulse meet in intimate songcraft.
Nirina Rakotomavo is a singer, pianist, composer and arranger from Réunion Island. With Paris Réunion, released in 2025, she turns two places that have shaped her life into a deeply personal musical landscape: the island where she grew up, and Paris, where she developed her voice as an artist.
Her music moves with ease between jazz, chanson, sega and maloya. Rather than treating these influences as separate styles, Nirina lets them meet naturally through melody, rhythm and the warmth of the human voice. Her piano playing remains at the heart of the project: fluid and expressive, it creates space for songs that are both intimate and generously open.
Paris Réunion is an autobiographical album, written as a collection of musical memories, inner journeys and lived connections. Sung in French and Creole, its songs evoke family, landscape, distance, tenderness and the feeling of belonging to more than one place. The project carries the colours of Réunion without ever being confined to tradition; it is contemporary, melodic and shaped by a refined sense of harmony.
On stage, Nirina Rakotomavo leads a six-piece ensemble in which close-knit arrangements meet the freedom of a live band. Guitar, bass and drums build a supple rhythmic foundation around her piano, while the two backing vocalists extend the songs into rich, enveloping vocal textures. The result is a luminous concert experience, balancing the precision of jazz writing with the direct emotional pull of pop and the rhythmic memory of island music.
Before launching her solo work, Nirina Rakotomavo built a wide-ranging artistic path as a performer and collaborator, notably alongside artists from the French chanson scene, and as co-founder of the vocal trio Selkies. She began classical piano at the age of seven, then continued her studies in Paris at the American School of Modern Music and the Nadia and Lili Boulanger Conservatoire.
Her project has already been presented at major venues and festivals, including Jazz à Vienne, where she performed as a Génération Spedidam artist. Paris Réunion confirms her singular place in today’s music landscape: a songwriter and bandleader whose work connects contemporary jazz, Creole heritage and finely crafted songs with genuine clarity and grace.
