Warmhearted Traditional Blues

Eric Assmar

Soulful blues guitar and unvarnished power-trio energy from Bahia.

Eric Assmar is a guitarist, singer and songwriter devoted to the enduring language of traditional electric blues. His work is built on the essentials: expressive guitar playing, an unmistakable vocal presence, strong songwriting and the close, organic exchange of a live band. With a sound grounded in classic blues tradition, he brings a personal sense of tone, groove and restraint to every performance.

A recognised figure of the contemporary blues scene, Assmar has developed his voice through years of work on stage, in the studio and as a dedicated student of the form. His approach does not seek to modernise the blues through effects or stylistic detours. Instead, it returns to what makes the music lasting: songs with weight, guitar lines that speak clearly, space between the notes and a rhythm section that lets the groove breathe.

His album Home marked a particularly personal chapter in this journey. Released in 2022, it is widely described as his most blues-focused record to date: a collection in which autobiographical writing meets a direct, unvarnished electric sound. The album follows earlier releases Eric Assmar Trio (2012) and Morning (2016), extending a catalogue shaped by craft, consistency and a deep respect for the classic blues songbook.

On stage, Eric Assmar favours the immediacy of the power-trio format. Guitar, voice, bass and drums form a compact, responsive setting where each performance can shift naturally between soulful vocals, melodic guitar statements, instrumental interplay and open, grounded rhythm. His concerts carry the warmth and spontaneity of a true live band: no excess, no distance, only musicians listening closely and allowing the songs to find their full intensity.

Beyond his recording work, Assmar has received the Caymmi Music Award for Best Instrumentalist and has developed extensive expertise as a blues researcher and educator. He holds a doctorate in music and has explored the history, language and teaching of blues guitar, bringing both knowledge and lived musical experience to his work. He has also helped sustain a regular public conversation around blues through the long-running Educadora Blues radio programme.

Eric Assmar’s music speaks to listeners who value the direct emotional force of traditional blues: the depth of a voice, the grain of an electric guitar, the elegance of a well-placed note and the shared pulse of a band. His work is rooted in tradition, but never frozen in it — carried instead by a musician who understands that the blues remains alive when it is played with honesty, precision and feeling.

Eric Assmar is available as a trio and also as a quartet project.
