PROGRESSIVE MALOYA JAZZ
Meddy Gerville
An ipressive Creole jazz experience where virtuosic piano and vibrant vocals.
Meddy Gerville is one of the leading voices of Réunion Island’s contemporary music scene. A pianist, singer, composer, arranger and producer, he has spent more than twenty-five years crafting a vibrant musical language where jazz meets maloya, séga and the many cultural currents of the Indian Ocean.Born in Saint-Pierre, Réunion, Gerville developed his artistic vision through a series of acclaimed recordings, beginning with Reunion Island in 1997 and Jazz’Oya in 2000. His work is rooted in the rhythmic and emotional power of maloya, the emblematic music of Reunion Island while opening it to the harmonic freedom of jazz, contemporary sounds and improvisation. This distinctive fusion, often described as Jazz’Oya or Maloya Jazz, has become his artistic signature.
A highly expressive pianist and charismatic performer, Meddy Gerville has collaborated with an exceptional range of musicians, including Randy Brecker, Lionel Loueke, Giovanni Hidalgo, Michel Alibo, Dominique Di Piazza, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez, Nguyen Lê, Hamilton de Holanda and Danyèl Waro. His projects have taken him to stages across Europe, China and the Indian Ocean, including appearances at the Olympia in Paris and collaborations with the Paris Jazz Big Band.
With albums such as Jazz Amwin, Tropical Rain and Mon Maloya, Gerville continues to explore a modern, generous and deeply Creole music. His ensemble combines sophisticated jazz interplay, irresistible grooves, powerful vocals and the pulsating rhythms of Reunion Island. The result is an uplifting live experience: a celebration of roots, movement and cultural exchange, carried by virtuosity, warmth and an unmistakable sense of place.
PRESS
The major discovery of the festival was Meddy Gerville, whose bracing maloya jazz, with its melodic shimmer and earthy, percussive foundation, struck a chord with the local audience.
KEVIN LE GENDRE, JAZZWISE (UK)
Meddy Gerville’s version of ‘Blue Rondo’ is the fastest I’ve ever heard it played. He has remarkable technique. His improvisations show a great sense of composition and development.
DAVE BRUBECK, American jazz pianist and composer
Gerville’s warm rhythms and Creole songs make for a trustworthy postcard of a far-flung island… His music has now made it to Beijing’s Nine Gates Jazz Festival.
