HIGH-WIRE ACOUSTIC JAZZ

Gaël Horellou

Four singular voices turning acoustic jazz into a field of friction, freedom and momentum.

Gaël Horellou is one of the most distinctive saxophonists of the French jazz scene: a musician whose powerful, lyrical sound and restless curiosity have shaped a career spanning acoustic jazz, electro-jazz, groove-based projects and large-scale collective adventures. Classically and jazz-trained, he began performing professionally in the early 1990s and first gained national recognition with the Mu Collective, winner of the Vienna Festival competition in 1995 and the Défense Jazz Competition in 1996. He later co-founded the electro-jazz project Cosmik Connection, awarded at the Printemps de Bourges and MIDEM Talents.

With Nowhere Out, Horellou returns to the essential language of the acoustic jazz quartet — but with no interest in playing it safe. Co-led with pianist Jean-Michel Pilc, the project brings together four major individual voices: Horellou on saxophone, Pilc on piano, Thomas Bramerie on double bass and Thomas Galliano on drums. Their shared ground is not a fixed repertoire or a prescribed aesthetic, but a commitment to listening, risk and collective invention.

Nowhere Out is a high-energy meeting point between four musicians who treat improvisation as the central architecture of the performance. Original compositions and bold reworkings of jazz standards provide material rather than boundaries. Each concert unfolds in real time, propelled by the interaction between Pilc’s unpredictable pianistic imagination, Horellou’s full-bodied and melodic saxophone voice, Bramerie’s deeply grounded bass playing and Galliano’s precise, elastic sense of groove.

Horellou’s contribution is central to the quartet’s identity. His playing carries both the directness of the jazz tradition and an appetite for open forms, allowing the music to move naturally between lyricism, urgency, swing and abstraction. In dialogue with Pilc, he brings a strong melodic instinct without reducing the music to familiar formulas; the quartet thrives on tension, surprise and the pleasure of taking the audience somewhere unplanned.

More than a reunion of accomplished musicians, Nowhere Out is a living conversation: acoustic jazz played at full intensity, with clarity, generosity and a sense of danger. It is a project for venues and festivals looking for a quartet capable of combining virtuosity with genuine spontaneity — a live experience in which no two performances can ever be the same.

Gaël Horellou is available as a quartet project.
